Welcome to the WoodCreek Junior High Band program! Many see band as a class on learning to play an instrument but it is so much more than that!  It includes development of friendships and experiences that students will take with them the rest of their lives.  Please be assured that participation in band will not impede on your student’s academic endeavors.  This is largely due to the self-discipline and high standard of achievement learned through experiences in band.  Band will only enhance and promote high academic and behavioral skills.

One of the most positive impressions you can offer your child is the gift of music and a chance to learn self-discipline at the highest level by participation in band.  Their social and communication skills, cooperative abilities, and creative minds will be nurtured through the study of music.  These life skills will serve as an important foundation as they take on various new responsibilities in the future. Check out the video below for more information from our directors and students!

What Do We Do In Band?

In addition to learning to play an instrument, the band performs at a wide variety of functions:

  • School-Wide Pep Rallies

  • Junior High and High School Football Games

  • Fall Masquerade Concert (with costumes and candy!)

  • Concerts at the Katy HS and Tompkins HS Performing Arts Centers

  • Outreach concerts in the community

  • Solo, small group, large group, jazz ensemble performance opportunities

  • and more!

Band students also enjoy a number of social activities throughout the year:

  • Ice Cream Socials

  • Houston Symphony Field Trip

  • Fine Arts Social @ Times Square

  • Band Carnival

  • Spring Trip - Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Can I Do Band and Sports/Clubs?

Absolutely! We have many band students who play football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, track, or are in cheerleading and ALSO participate in band. The band directors and coaches work together so that students can do both activities. We also have many students who participate in activities outside of WCJH, such as baseball, golf, martial arts, scouts, and church youth groups. Our students are also routinely the top achieving academic students at WoodCreek Junior High.  You name it, our students do it AND are successful in band, their other activities, and academics.

What's the Next Step?

We will host special meetings in April 2025 where you can come try all the different instruments offered in band. You will ONLY be invited to these meetings if you select band as your FIRST choice elective on the course selection sheet provided by the counselors. After spring break, the counselors will send us your name and we will email you an invitation to our Instrument Selection meetings.

Your instrument choice is based on your interests, physical characteristics, and instrumentation needs of the band; our staff will help guide you through the selection process. Our number-one goal is to help you choose the instrument that you will be the most successful on in band. Although you may already have an idea of what instrument you'd like to play, you may or may not be well suited for it, so all we ask is that you keep an OPEN MIND.

Prior to Instrument Selection, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the eleven different instruments included in band. There is no such thing as "boy instruments" or "girl instruments" and anyone can play any size instrument, regardless of physical size. Click on the pictures below to learn more about each instrument; you will be asked to try at least 3 different instruments at Instrument Selection so be sure to investigate instruments you don't know much about!

Once you've investigated all the instrument options, it's time to sign up!
